At least eight people have lost their lives and 84 others have been injured following a devastating arson attack on a residential hotel in Jessore, Bangladesh. The hotel, owned by Shahin Chakladar, the general secretary of the Jashore district Awami League, was set ablaze by unidentified attackers on Monday.
Deputy Commissioner Abrarul Islam confirmed the incident, which has resulted in significant casualties. Among the deceased are Sejan Hossain, 19, and Chayan, 20. The injured, many of whom are students, are receiving treatment at Jashore General Hospital, as reported by Harun-or-Rashid, a hospital staff member.
The violence erupted amidst widespread celebrations in Jessore following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During these celebrations, some protesters targeted Jabir Hotel in the Chittarmore area, setting it on fire and destroying its furniture. The unrest quickly spread to other locations, with attacks on the district Awami League office and the homes of three Awami League leaders in Sharsha and Benapole.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned in response to mounting protests in Dhaka, arrived in India on Monday evening. It remains uncertain whether she will remain in Delhi or travel elsewhere, with speculations suggesting a possible move to London.
Following Hasina's resignation, violence continued as miscreants set fire to the residence of Narail-2 MP Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and vandalized the District Awami League office and the home of District Awami League President Subash Chandra Bose. Similar attacks occurred at the residence of MP Shamim Osman in Narayanganj and at the home of Comilla-6 MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar in Comilla.
In Chittagong, attackers targeted at least six police stations, looting weapons and equipment. Police stations in Chandgaon, Patenga, EPZ, Kotowali, Akbar Shah, and Pahartali were set on fire, and police personnel were injured during the assaults.
The unrest saw an escalation as attackers attempted to breach the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara, prompting police to respond with tear gas and rubber bullets. The Chittagong Central Jail and the Chittagong District Police Lines were also targeted.
Sheikh Hasina, currently in India, met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad to discuss the situation and her next steps. The Indian Air Force has heightened security measures in response to the unfolding events.
The protests, initially sparked by student demands to end a government job quota system, have evolved into widespread anti-government demonstrations.
