Bank credit growth scales up to 14.2 pc in June quarter: RBI data

According to figures released by the RBI on Thursday, bank credit growth increased to 14.2 percent in the quarter that ended in June 2022 from 6 percent in the same time the year before. In the three months that ended in March 2022, bank credit had increased by 10.8 percent.

Credit-deposit (C-D) ratio has increased as credit growth has recently outpaced deposit growth. According to the RBI, it was 73.5 percent across all of India in June (compared to 70.5 percent a year earlier) and 86.2 percent for bank branches in metropolises (compared to 84.3 percent a year earlier).

The RBI reports that from 6 percent a year ago and 10.8 percent a quarter ago, credit growth (y-o-y) surged further to 14.2 percent in June.

All demographic groups (rural, semi-urban, urban, and metropolitan), all bank types (public/private sector banks, foreign banks, regional rural banks, small finance banks), and all geographical areas (central, eastern, north-eastern, nothern, southern, and western) of the nation recorded double-digit annual credit growth in June, said RBI data

Metropolitan branches continue to account for more than half of bank deposits, and their proportion has slightly increased over the last year. Aggregate deposit growth (year-over-year) has stayed in the range of 9.5-10.2 percent during the last five quarters.

Over the past three years, deposits from current and savings accounts (CASA) have become a larger portion of overall deposits (42.0 percent, 43.8 percent and 44.5 percent in June of 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively).
