Bank fraud case: Andhra Ex-MP, husband get 5-year jail

HYDERABAD: A court of Central Burea of Investigation on Wednesday sentenced former Member of Parliament from Andhra Pradesh, Kothapalli Geetha, her husband P. Ramakoteshwara Rao as well as two bank officials to five years imprisonment in a bank fraud case.

Geetha, a former Lok Sabha representative from Araku, along with other others, were detained and taken to Chanchalguda Central Jail. 

Sentencing them for cheating the Punjab National Bank (PNB) to the tune of Rs 42.9 crore, the CBI court also imposed a fine of rupees one lakh each on Geetha and her husband.

To obtain loan for Visweswara Infrastructure Pvt Ltd., the former MP was accused of defrauding the bank by submitting forged paperwork (VIPL).

Ramakoteshwara Rao is the Managing Director of the company. The company also allegedly diverted the loan for purposes other than it was sanctioned for.

In 2015, the CBI filed a charge sheet against them.

B.K. Jayaprakasam, a former branch manager of PNB's Mid Corporate Branch, and K.K. Aravindakshan, a former general manager of PNB's head office, are the other defendants who were found guilty and given sentences.

Geetha was elected by the YSR Congress Party to represent Araku in the Lok Sabha in 2014. (YSRCP). She launched the political party Jana Jagruti in 2018. Later, she united her party with the BJP after joining them.
