New Delhi: The Finance Ministry has decided to merge OBC and United Bank with PNB. PNB said that its board of directors will meet soon on this issue. PNB told the stock market that as per the information received from the Finance Ministry, the government has decided that Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India can consider the merger after consultations with the Reserve Bank.

Punjab National Bank has said, "A board meeting will be called soon to consider the merger on behalf of the bank." Meanwhile, Corporation Bank has also said that a board meeting will be called to discuss the merger. Corporation Bank and Andhra Bank are to be merged with Union Bank of India. Corporation Bank informed the stock markets that a meeting of the Board of Directors would be called to discuss the merger within a fixed period.

The government on Friday announced merging ten big public sector banks to form four banks. Accordingly, PNB is to be merged with Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India, Canara Bank with Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India with Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank and Indian Bank with Allahabad Bank. After the merger, the total number of public sector banks will be 12. The government termed the move as banking interest.
