London Olympics bronze medalists Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth would like to put up a strong performance in the Spain Masters starting on Tuesday, 18 February 2020 to keep their hopes of playing in the Tokyo Olympics alive. 2019 was disappointing for both of them. Even earlier this year, there was a lack of stamina in his performance. Saina is the second of the three tournaments played this season, while Srikanth is out in the first round. Saina's current ranking is 18 while Srikanth's 15. In 'Race to Tokyo' these two players are in 22nd and 26th place respectively. According to BWF Olympic qualification rules, only players who are in the top-16 rankings will get direct tickets at the end of April.

In the singles category, a maximum of two players of one country can qualify. Saina will start her campaign against Yvonne Lee of Germany and Srikanth against compatriot Shubhankar Dey. P Kashyap will play Yagol Coelho of Brazil, HS Prannoy from Malaysia's Daren Liew, Saurabh Verma from Israel's Misha Zilberman and Sameer Verma from compatriot Praneeth.
