New Delhi: When the Income Tax department team reached the office of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) to investigate tax irregularities, it was said to be an attempt to suppress the media, but now the British company itself has admitted to paying less tax and has also agreed to pay 40 crore taxes. Earlier, the BBC had denied tax evasion and claimed to cooperate with the investigation.

According to media reports, the BBC has admitted to paying less tax between 2016 and 2022. To compensate for this, he has also filed an application with the Income Tax Department to deposit about Rs 40 crore. It has also been told in the report that tax assessment is yet to come from the Income Tax Department. However, to avoid the case, the BBC has filed this application before the Income Tax Department. However, a report quoted sources as saying that the BBC has neither yet reimbursed the outstanding income tax nor has any written application been made for it. Only one statement has been made by the British company to pay income tax.

On February 14, the Income Tax Department raided the BBC's offices in Delhi and Mumbai and conducted a survey work for three days. After the completion of the survey on February 16, 2023, the Income Tax Department, without naming the BBC, had said in a statement that the survey was conducted under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act, 1961 in the offices of a leading international media company in Delhi and Mumbai.

In this survey of the Income Tax Department, it was found that the media company is doing business in various Indian languages. However, the earnings reported by the BBC do not match his business. According to the type of business the British company is doing, the income should be higher, but the income has been hidden to avoid paying taxes. During this survey, the department found many such evidence, which shows that the BBC did not pay taxes according to income. The Income Tax Department had seized digital evidence and necessary documents present in the BBC office and also questioned its employees. The Income Tax Department had said that these evidences will be examined if needed.
