Jasprit Bumrah, an elite Indian pacer, was officially disqualified from the 2018 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia on Monday by the BCCI due to a back injury. After the ailment flared up, Bumrah was initially ruled out of the ongoing three-match T20I home series against South Africa. Due to the injury, the 28-year-old also missed the Asia Cup.

"The BCCI Medical team has ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists," a BCCI statement read. "The BCCI will be naming a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in the squad for the marquee tournament soon," the statement further added.

India's campaign gets underway on October 23 in Melbourne against arch-rival Pakistan. India has already lost all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to a knee injury, so Bumrah's absence is a major setback. Aside from 14 games with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, Bumrah has only played five games in each of the three leagues this year.

When India unveiled its roster for the prestigious tournament, seamers Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar were listed as backup players. Mohammed Siraj replaced Bumrah in the South Africa series. India, the 2007 T20 World Cup champion, was unable to move to the final rounds of last year's competition in the United Arab Emirates. Since making his debut for India in a match against Australia in January 2016, Bumrah has participated in 30 Tests, 72 ODIs, and 60 T20Is.
