Strong bipartisan opposition blocked a Republican-sponsored war powers resolution on Wednesday, with opponents of the measure arguing that a military withdrawal could revive terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).
The bill, introduced by Republican Matt Gaetz of Florida, called for a complete withdrawal of US troops within six months and said Congress had not approved a longer deployment in the first place.
