Kolkata: Congress leader Rezaul Haq, who is contesting the Assembly elections in West Bengal, has passed away due to corona infection. The Congress leader was contesting from Shamsherjung assembly seat in Murshidabad. Let us share that recently there was a dispute between the Left Front and the Congress over this seat. The Left Front had already declared Modassar Hossain as its candidate from the seat, while the Congress fielded Rezaul Haque as its candidate. Though the two are contesting together, the two parties could not agree on the seat.

Assembly elections are underway in eight phases in West Bengal. The fifth phase of voting is scheduled for April 17. 45 seats are going to be elected in this phase. Campaigning for this has come to a halt. However, the Election Commission increased the silence period from 48 hours to 72 hours. The election commission has taken this step in view of the violence in Behar during the fourth phase of relief. In this phase, 1.13 crore Voters of West Bengal will exercise their franchise.

The fate of 342 candidates will be decided at this stage. Prominent candidates for this phase include Siliguri Mayor and Left Front Leader Ashok Bhattacharya, State Minister Vrat Basu, BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya. 15,789 polling stations have been set up for this phase in 24 North Parganas districts. Voting will begin at 7 a.m. People will be able to exercise their franchise by 6.30 pm.
