Bengal Panchayat Polls, Counting Begins Amid Violence

KOLKATA: The counting process for the three-tier panchayat Polls in West Bengal commenced on Tuesday, accompanied by reports of sporadic violence and clashes emerging from various parts of the state.

Within the total of 73,887 seats, there are 928 seats at the zilla parishad level, 9,730 seats at the panchayat samiti level, and 63,229 seats at the gram panchayat level.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has taken an early lead in the counting process with uncontested victories in 8,941 seats. Out of the 8,941 seats, 16 belong to the zilla parishad level, 981 to the panchayat samiti level, and 7,944 to the gram panchayat level.

No uncontested seats at the zilla parishad level have been won by any other party apart from the Trinamool Congress.

Regarding the panchayat samiti level, independent candidates have won 10 uncontested seats. As for the gram panchayat level, the BJP has secured two seats, the CPI(M) three seats, and independent candidates 53 seats.

Meanwhile, sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from various locations in the state since the beginning of the counting process.

West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday, adhering to his commitment to play the role of an "on-ground Governor." He immediately headed to Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, which has been the focal point of the violence.

Clashes between the Congress and Trinamool Congress were reported in Samserganj, Murshidabad district, where crude bombs were thrown. 

In Jangipara, Hooghly district, the police resorted to a lathi charge within the CPI(M) office, according to reports.

CPI(M) supporters in Bagnan, Howrah district, staged roadblocks and set tires ablaze, alleging that their representatives were forcibly removed from the counting station by activists of the ruling party.

Clashes were also observed in Galsi, East Burdwan.
