Kolkata: The Bengal BJP has written to the Election Commission (EC) alleging that Kolkata police DCP South has "attacked and molested" his candidate Priyanka Tibrewal from Bhowanipore. According to media reports, the letter submitted to the Election Commission said, "Our candidate Priyanka Tibrewal, State President MP Dr Sukant Majumdar, Jyotirmay Singh Mahato and Arjun Singh have been molested and physically assaulted. This letter is to bring to your immediate notice for necessary action. This is a clear violation aimed at preventing a free and fair election and creating unrest during elections.''

According to the letter, the incident took place on September 23 when BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal, MP Sukantmujar, MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato and MP Arjun Singh had left for a peaceful funeral procession of Manas Saha, a victim of post-election violence. Manas Saha was injured in the violence by TMC, who later died. The BJP said in the letter that DCP South Akash Magharia broke through the peaceful procession and started dragging and pushing Sukant Majumdar. The same officer also unfairly molested Priyanka Tibrewal and the women present there.

The letter says, "Such illegal practice by a civil servant acting at the behest of the ruling party not only breaks the morale of every proud Indian but also violates the law under sections 166, 166A, 334, 354,336, 339,349, 350,351, 354, 354 (A) (B) and 355 of the IPC. The party demands that DCP South, Akash Magharia and other Kolkata Police officers present on the spot be identified and removed from election duty immediately. He also demanded suspension of the officials.''
