Kolkata: In Kolkata, West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury expressed concern on Friday over the prevention of opposition political parties from visiting Sandeshkhali, a region embroiled in protests against alleged atrocities committed by leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of attempting to politicize the situation for its own gains.

The Congress-led rally, spearheaded by Chowdhury, faced initial hurdles as the police halted their progress first at Sarberia and later at Rampur while en route to Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. Chowdhury questioned the motives behind preventing opposition parties from accessing Sandeshkhali and raised suspicions about the state government's intentions. He urged transparency in the handling of the situation, emphasizing the need to avoid politicization. The police defended their actions by citing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) as the basis for denying entry to the Congress delegation into Sandeshkhali. Despite being stopped at Rampur village, Chowdhury and his fellow Congress workers staged a sit-in demonstration to register their protest against the restrictions.

Meanwhile, protests in Sandeshkhali continued unabated for the eighth consecutive day, with a significant presence of women demonstrators demanding the arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates. The ongoing unrest underscores the deep-seated grievances within the community and the demand for swift justice for the victims of alleged atrocities.
