A Bengaluru-based company provided the crew module fairing (CMF), a critical structure that will protect the Gaganyaan module carrying the astronauts during launch, to The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (Isro) Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), which the company was commissioned to build.
While the design as specifications came from ISRO, the CMF was manufactured by Alpha Design Technology Limited’s (ADTL) fully owned subsidiary Alpha Tocol Engineering Services in Peenya. The majority stake of ADTL belongs to the Adani Group.
“While working with Isro is always challenging, completing projects brings satisfaction that is unrivaled. It was the same with this, especially because we did it in such a short period of time and as VSSC director Unnikrishnan Nair said while receiving the CMF, it is one of the most difficult designs to manufacture.” ADTL CMD Col retd) HS Shankar told TOI.
As is with satellites, the fairing is a protective structure that protects the payload — the crew module in the case of Gaganyaan — against the impact of dynamic pressure and aerodynamic heating during launch through an atmosphere.
ADTL is working with ISRO on satellites, and ground stations, including in Bhutan, Andaman and Nicobar, northeast India, and on launchers such as PSLV and GSLV.
Sources in NSIL confirmed that even others firms will get the IMS-1 technology, even though they did not reveal the names.
