On August 21, India will witness a nationwide shutdown, or Bharat Bandh, organized by the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti. This protest is in response to the Supreme Court's recent decision regarding SC/ST reservations. Various SC/ST groups in Rajasthan have expressed their support for the bandh.

Reasons Behind the Bharat Bandh

The Supreme Court's ruling allows states to establish sub-categories within the SC and ST groups, prioritizing those who "really need it" for reservations. This decision has led to significant controversy, with the Bharat Bandh aiming to challenge and reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Security and Preparations

In anticipation of potential unrest, police deployment will be increased across all districts. The Director General of Police (DGP), UR Sahoo, has instructed Superintendents of Police (SPs) to maintain law and order during the bandh.

To prepare for any disruptions, top police officials, including divisional commissioners and district magistrates, have participated in video conferences to coordinate their strategies. Western Uttar Pradesh is particularly on high alert due to its sensitivity, with extensive measures in place to ensure public safety.

What Will Be Affected

Typically, public transport and private offices are expected to be closed during the Bharat Bandh. However, emergency services such as ambulances will continue to operate.
