New Delhi: India's only indigenous vaccine, Covaxin, has been sent to the World Health Organization for emergency use permission amid the vaccination drive. The meeting will decide to evaluate the vaccine and include it in the list of WHO. However, Covaxin is among the three vaccines being used in a nationwide campaign against the corona epidemic in India. It was allowed along with the covishield of serum institute by DCGI in January.
But if Covaxin is allowed by the WHO, it will be a great success, as well as facilitate people who have taken a dose of covaxin. Allowing the licensing process from WHO for Covaxin is like settling a major dispute, as doubts have been raised about the efficacy of covaxin from the very beginning, as it was allowed to be used before the trial of the third phase of the vaccine was completed.
At least 2 Covaxins in the country so far. More than 5 crore doses have been given. Bharat Biotech had reported in April that Covaxin is up to 78 per cent effective on normal corona patients. The World Health Organization has so far approved emergency use for a total of seven vaccine manufacturing companies around the world, three of which are for Oxford-Estregeneka vaccine manufacturers, with presentations from different national level regulators.
