Bhima Koregaon case: Bombay High Court refuses to grant bail to the accused

MUMBAI: Civil rights activists Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves have suffered a major setback in the famous Bhima Koregaon violence case. The Bombay High Court yesterday refused to grant bail to these civil rights activists arrested on Tuesday for allegedly liaising with Maoists and for allegedly inciting caste-based violence in Koregaon-Bhima in Pune. Justice Sarang Kotwal rejected the bail pleas of the three activists.

In August last year, the Pune police of Maharashtra arrested the accused first. He was taken into custody on 26 October after a Pune sessions court turned down his bail pleas. At that time all three activists are in jail. After which he approached the High Court last year. Police have registered a case against the three accused and several others under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

The Elgar Parishad was organized on 31 December 2017, following which violence erupted in Koregaon-Bhima village in Pune. After this, a case was registered against him in January 2018. Police alleged that the accused have links with Maoists and are planning to overthrow the government. However, the three accused have claimed to have no evidence against them.
