Kolkata: A case of euthanasia has come to light in Hooghly, West Bengal. In Uttarpara, an 87-year-old man chose his euthanasia after fasting for 19 consecutive days. During these 19 days of fasting, the elderly performed Hari Kirtan by constantly chanting the name of God. Family members said that they come from the Surana caste of the Jain community and it is customary in their religion that the elderly people of their sect who want to choose euthanasia in old age have the freedom to do so. This process of euthanasia of elderly people belonging to surana caste of Jain community is called Santhara.

Though the Uttarpara police station reached the spot and took full details of the case as soon as the incident was reported, the police refused to intervene as the case of euthanasia was linked to religious sentiments of a sect. There is a belief in Jainism that when a person lives his life completely and the body stops supporting him, he can take santhara at that time. Santhara is a religious resolution. The man then gives up food and waits for death. After many days of sacrificing food, his life is lost.

According to Jainism, only religious leaders can allow santhara to a person. After their permission, the person gives up food. The scripture is recited around that person and there is a discourse. That is why the old man of Hooghly was performing green kirtan around him when he gave up food.
