In a tragic incident, 3 girls and a boy died and two other children were injured on Monday in a mudslide near Banjara nullah in Barkhedi village in Sukhisewaniya at 10 am. The site is located 22 kilometres from district headquarters.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief over the incident and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. All the deceased were relatives. They have been identified as Manoj aka Banne 7, Asha 7, Sheela 9 and Kavita 12, all residents of Doob Barkhedi village.

As per information, 7 children, aged between 7 and 12 years, had gone near the nullah to dig out yellow mud to colour their houses for Diwali, Bhopal Zone-2 ASP Rajesh Singh Badhoriya said. Six of them were excavating mud when loose soil caved in and they were trapped. Seeing this, the seventh boy ran to a village nearby and informed people who in turn called the police. The children were pulled out from the heap of mud and taken to hospital but three girls and a boy died en route to Hamadia Hospital while two children were admitted there with injuries. The area is dotted with dug-up portions and thus there are several mounds of soil. Bhopal collector Avinash Lavania has issued orders to prohibit soil mining in the area.
