Supreme Court extends hearing in Bhopal gas tragedy case

The Supreme Court heard the petition of the Central Government demanding additional funds of Rs 7,844 crore to compensate the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy. When the hearing began, Justice Mishra said that we will hear it on February 11. Now other judges will hear this. The Center's plea, requesting an additional amount of Rs 7,844 crore from the successor companies of the US-based Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) to give compensation to the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, will now be heard on February 11.

According to the media report, a 5-member bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra also said that a separate bench of judges in the Supreme Court will hear this petition. Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, who was part of the five-member bench, on Tuesday recused himself from hearing the case saying that he had previously appeared in the case on behalf of the Indian government when the government requested for reconsideration.

In addition to the amount of US $ 47 million previously set aside to pay compensation to the families affected by the gas tragedy, Union Carbide and other firms should be given an additional Rs 7,844 crore. More than 3 thousand people were killed and 1.02 lakh people were badly affected in the tragedy caused by MIC gas leak on December 2-3, 1984 from Union Carbide Corporation's Bhopal plant.
