Rome: As Iran's nuclear programme progresses, President Joe Biden will meet with European allies on Saturday to discuss strategy as they push for a diplomatic solution - and to prepare for the possibility that Iran will refuse to return to the negotiating table. Biden is attempting to resurrect the 2015 nuclear deal and bring Iran back into compliance with the agreement, which would have prevented Iran from developing nuclear weapons for at least a year.

The E3 summit with the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom comes at a critical juncture, as Iran continues to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels. The meeting with Angela Merkel of Germany, Emmanuel Macron of France, and Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom will feature the leaders "all singing from the same song sheet on this issue," according to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan. He described it as a "study in contrast to the previous administration because Iran was one of the areas where the previous administration and the Europeans had the most profound divergence." Iran is increasingly breaking the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, according to the United Nations' nuclear regulator.

President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear deal, but the US has been involved in indirect talks to bring both Washington and Tehran back into compliance. Since June, when Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi assumed power, the Vienna talks have been on hold. The deal includes the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China, and the European Union.
