The  U.S. President Joe Biden announced Monday, August 8,  that the United States will provide Ukraine with 1 billion U.S. dollars worth of additional security support,  which is considered the largest one-time weapons package since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The 18th tranche of the presidential drawdown since August 2021 included additional ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), 75,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery ammunition, 20 120 mm mortar systems, and 20,000 rounds of 120 mm mortar ammunition, as well as ammunition for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, the Department of Defense said in a statement (NASAMS).

Apart from 1,000 Javelins, Kiev will also receive 50 armoured medical treatment vehicles, hundreds of AT4 anti-armor systems, anti-personnel munitions, explosives, demolition munitions, and equipment, according to the statement.

The Pentagon estimates that since Biden took office, the U.S. has committed a total of 9.8 billion dollars in security assistance to Ukraine.

Russian officials had earlier announced a humanitarian corridor from the Azot plant, but said they would take civilians to areas controlled by Russian, not Ukrainian, forces.

The recent attacks came as Ukraine keeps up its pressure on Western countries to deliver more arms and as NATO countries pledge more heavy weapons for Ukraine.
