US President Joe Biden, a huge supporter of the electric vehicle, on Wednesday offered to give reporters and onlookers at an auto show a trip to Washington in a unique and uncommon gesture. The Cadillac Lyriq, a high-end electric car that costs $61,795 and features hands-free driver assistance technology, was observed being driven by the President (Rs 49 lakh). Biden may be heard speaking as the car slowly crosses the carpet in the convention hall of the Detroit auto show, "Anyone wants a ride to Washington?" "Come on, jump in. I'll give you a ride to Washington," he said.

A journalist was then overheard saying, "Is that my Uber? Uber ride?" Biden, in a humourous manner, replied, "It's an Uber."

“It’s a beautiful car, but I like the Corvette," the US President added. He also referred to himself as a "car guy" and said that attending an auto show, particularly one featuring electric vehicles, always makes him feel upbeat and hopeful. "You know, you all know I’m a car guy. I’m here because the auto show and the vehicles here give me so many reasons to be optimistic about the future. And I really mean it. Just looking at them and driving them, they just give me a sense of optimism, although I like the speed too," the White House quoted him as saying. 

Biden promises a $7.5 billion investment to construct charging stations.

President Biden stated that numerous businesses have announced new investments totalling more than $36 billion in electric vehicle manufacturing and $48 billion in battery manufacturing in the nation. He also stated that he is proposing a tax credit for anyone who purchases a used electric vehicle.

He declared that the federal government is prepared to spend $7.5 billion to erect electric vehicle charging stations across the nation.

"I’m pleased to announce we’re approving funding for the first 35 states, including Michigan, to build their own electric charging infrastructure throughout their state. Look — look, folks, you know, the great American road trip is going to be fully electrified," he announced.
