WASHINGTON:  US President Joe Biden announced to the public that he will meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on November 14 in Bali, with Taiwan expected to be the main topic of discussion.

The two leaders will meet for the first time since Biden took office in January 2021 during the G20 conference in Bali, according to the White House.

Biden responded, "I'm not willing to make any fundamental concessions," when asked at the press conference if he was committed to defending Taiwan militarily and willing to make any compromises. Biden added that he "met with him (Xi) several times" when serving as vice president under previous president Barack Obama, adding that he "told him: I'm looking for competition, not conflict."

Apart  from that, the President stated that he wanted to know from Xi "what each of our red lines are, what he considers to be in the essential national interests of China, and what I know to be the key interests of the US, and to evaluate whether or not they conflict with one another."

If they do, how to deal with it and figure it out" he said.

Biden said, Taiwan "Since its inception, the Taiwan philosophy has not evolved at all. So I'm confident we'll talk about Taiwan. Also, I'm sure we'll talk about a variety of other topics, such as fair trade and his connections with other nations in the region." When US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island in August, tensions between the US and China over the Taiwan issue rose.

China's response was to conduct extensive military drills near the island.

Biden has said repeatedly that the US would defend Taiwan in the case of a Chinese invasion, in contrast to previous US Presidents. The meeting between the two Presidents was also confirmed by the White House in a statement on Thursday.

Biden and Xi  Jinping will discuss measures to maintain and  deepen lines of communication between the two countries, appropriately manage competition, and collaborate when their interests coincide, particularly on transnational issues that have an impact on the global community.

The White House noted that they will also talk about a number of local and international concerns.
