Mumbai: NCP leader Nawab Malik, implicated in money laundering and buying properties from close friends of Dawood Ibrahim, has suffered a double blow. On Friday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain his plea, while the PMLA court extended his judicial custody till May 6. Earlier, Malik had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the order of the Bombay High Court, under which the High Court had rejected his interim application for immediate release.

The ED is probing the laundering case against Malik. On the bail plea, the Supreme Court said that we will not interfere at this stage of the investigation. In such a situation, you should file a bail application in the appropriate court. While demanding his release, Malik said that the PMLA Act is of 2005. But he was arrested for the transaction in 1999. The ED on Thursday filed a chargesheet against NCP leader Nawab Malik in a money laundering case related to fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

The case pertains to misappropriation of money in the purchase of Malik's underworld connections and properties related to him. ED's advocates had said during this period that a chargesheet of more than 5,000 pages has been filed in the registry of the court. The Special Court for Prevention of Money Laundering Act cases will take cognizance of the charge sheet after verification of documents. The ED has started investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Dawood Ibrahim and his associates under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act recently. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik was arrested by the ED on February 23 in this case. At present, he is lodged in the Arthur Road Jail in judicial custody.
