Humans can recognize faces even with half the brain: Study reveals

The left and right part of the human brain is known to recognize words and faces. New research has shown that even if people do not have this half of their brain, they will also be able to recognize words and faces well. This research has not yet been published. But the authors of the research say that this discovery also provides new information about the plasticity of the brain. This research talks about how after surgery, a part can rewire itself to perform additional tasks.

To find out if a single part is able to identify faces and words, the researchers took the help of 40 adult volunteers whose half of their brains had been removed in childhood (Hemispherectomy). Doing so was the last option to overcome the intense cases of epilepsy and seizures in one part of the brain.

These people were also told a four-letter word and a face, for just three-quarters of a second. Before which he was also shown any other word or face for only 150 milliseconds. They were then asked whether the words and faces shown to them were the same or different. Although the patients did not perform better than normal people, they had an average accuracy rate of face and word recognition of more than 80 per cent. The researchers found that the accuracy of the part of the patient's brain that was removed did not depend on that part.

In a second experiment, the researchers asked all participants to recognize words and faces that appear on the edge of the screen, not in the middle. Things that are seen in the left part of the scene are usually controlled by the right side of the brain. and things on the right from the left side of the mind. Let us know that ordinary people performed well this time too. But it was surprising that there was not much difference in the performance of people with only one part of the brain. Overall, the results also show that a part of the evolving brain, whether left or right, adapts itself to the recognition of faces and words. However, such plasticity also depends on age.
