Big meeting in Kabul to improve Pak-Afghan relationship

ISLAMABAD: Two high officials of Pakistan travelled to Kabul to negotiate with the Afghan authorities on recent events that have created tensions in bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. This information was given on Tuesday. Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Sohail Mahmood and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt. Gen. Faiz Hamid National Security Advisor of Afghanistan on Monday in Kabul meeting with Hamdullah Mohib.

Confirming the meeting, the Afghan National Security Council spokesman, Kabir Haqmal, said in Kabul that the two sides discussed ways to normalize the relationship. According to the sources, the agenda of the talks included a dispute over an Afghan market in Peshawar, incidents of border firing and harassment of each other's diplomats.

The Afghan government last month protested against police raids in the Afghan market in Peshawar over the ownership of a property. After this, Kabul closed its consulate in Peshawar. The Pakistan government had said that the dispute over the market took place between a civilian and an Afghan bank and a court in 1998 ruled in this regard in favor of the citizen.
