Lucknow: In uttarPradesh, in the name of potent drugs, the youth are falling prey to stomach diseases. In ayurvedic medicines, ashes have been found in place of bhasma and common leaves crushed in powder. This has been revealed in the samples from all the districts in the Government Drug Testing Laboratory of the Department of Ayurveda. Now, the Director of Ayurveda has directed all the regional Ayurvedic and Unani officers to launch a campaign to check the medicines.

From April 2018 to March 2022, 192 samples were sent to the Government Drug Testing Laboratory of the Department of Ayurveda across the state. Out of this, 11 were returned for not being verifiable, while 11 were pending due to non-availability of authorised letters from the district level. Two samples were rejected. Of the remaining 170 samples, only 40 were found to be of quality. According to sources, most of the medicines found to be unproductive are potency drugs. It contains ash in the bhasma. There were no nutrients in it. Similarly, the powder also did not have the elements recorded on the respective drug packets. Crushed leaves have been found in the powder. On the other hand, only sera has been found in the syrup. The painkillers contained ordinary oil and camphor. The same is true of other drugs.

The special thing is that most of the medicines found sub-standard are from the village industries running in different cities of the State. Some medicines are also made in Punjab. Some of the medicines also belong to the Ayurveda pharmaceutical company in Jhansi and Gwalior. The lab in-charge has sent a letter to the Regional Ayurvedic and Unani Officer of the concerned district along with the Directorate of Ayurveda regarding all the sub-standard medicines. Notices have been sent to the manufacturer of the drugs which have been found to be substandard. In order to avoid such a problem in the future, departmental officers are investigating in all the cities. Now the licensing system for drug manufacturing has been changed. It has been made mandatory to have one doctor and three technical staff in the manufacturing unit. Good manifesto practices of the concerned medicine have to be done in 5 years. In such a situation, substandard medicines will not come in the market.
