TRIPURA: According to a report, 45 of the 259 candidates running in the February 16 Tripura Assembly election are crorepatis.

A survey by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) revealed that The ruling BJP has 17 crorepati candidates followed by Tipra Motha with nine and CPI(M) seven, the report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 
According to the statement, the Trinamool Congress has four crorepati candidates, the Congress has six, and two independent candidates are also crorepati.

The richest candidate is BJP Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, who is running in the Charilam constituency and has assets of 15.58 crore in both moveable and immovable property, according to the survey.

Doctor and chief minister Manik Saha is the second-richest contender, according to ADR's state coordinator Biswendu Bhattacharjee, who spoke to PTI on Wednesday. His assets are $13.90 crore. Saha is running from the Town Bardowali district.

Abhijit Sarkar of the Tipra Motha, who has 12.57 crore, is the third-richest candidate, according to Bhattacharjee.
The BJP which has fielded 55 candidates has also the highest average assets with Rs.1.86 crore, he said. Congress candidate from the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency, Chayan Bhattacharya has the highest liabilities at Rs.3.07 crore, he said.

"Out of the total aspirants of the ensuing elections, 41 (16 percent) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. In the 2018 elections, out of 297 candidates, 22 (7 percent) nominees had declared criminal cases", he said.

Bhattacharjee said, nine out of 55 BJP candidates have criminal cases, compared to seven out of 13 Congress candidates' (54 percent) criminal cases.

"Of the 43 Left Front candidates, nine (16 percent) have criminal cases. Eight candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder", he said.

65 of the 259 total candidates are graduates, 55 have passed class 12, and 39 are in their first year of college. The ADR report further said that 36 candidates are class 8 graduates and 9 are class 5 graduates.
