Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said a total of 42 children from the state were rescued in Sikkim and brought back to the state on Friday. Sarma told reporters here that the parents of the children are residents of four villages of Chirang district on the Indo-Bhutan border and two people had lured them and assured them that the education of these children would be taken care of but they were being taken care of as domestic helpers.

The same officials said that two criminals have been arrested and due to interrogation, one of them claimed that he had taken 80 children out of the state in the last two years and some of them were sent to Dubai. The chirang police, under the direction of Bodoland Provincial Council Chief Pramod Bodo and Special DGP LR Bishnoi, launched the operation for the return of the children while Sikkim police provided necessary assistance and help.

At the same time, most of the children in the age group of 9 to 18 years are tribal and Bengali, while some coaches belong to Rajbongshi and Bodo communities. Sarma said, "We are also trying to trace other children who were smuggled, and this kind of operation will continue. Smuggling is a matter of concern and we will need the policy of the State to get rid of it. The State Government is committed to eradicating the evils of human trafficking from Assam, and more campaigns will be launched to expose such networks and deal with the perpetrators of crime harshly.''
