Amritsar: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Brikam Singh Majithia, accused in punjab's drugs case, has been granted anticipatory bail by the high court. The accused Majithia has been directed to relieve arrest and cooperate in the investigation by Wednesday. The high court's decision is seen as a major setback to Punjab Congress unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu, CM Charanjeet Singh Channi and deputy CM CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
During the hearing, the Punjab-Haryana High Court witnessed heated arguments between P Chidambaram on behalf of the Channi government and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi on behalf of Majithia. Following the outcome of the debate, the High Court granted Majithia anticipatory bail. The accused Majithia had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the Mohali court to avoid arrest, which was dismissed. Majithia then moved the High Court. The Congress government in Punjab had on December 21, 2021 booked Bikram Singh Majithia under the NDPS Act in a drugs case. Bikram Majithia has been said to be absconding ever since.
Meanwhile, state Congress unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu has been questioning his own government for not arresting Akali leader Bikram Majithia at frequent election rallies since he came to power in Punjab. Fed up with Sidhu's statements, Sukhjinder Randhawa had even asked him to leave the Home Ministry. On the other hand, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had termed the FIR registered in the Majithia drugs case as politically motivated.
