LOS ANGELES: A New York state legislation that temporarily suspends the statute of limitations for earlier sexual assault accusations has led to five women suing NBC and actor Bill Cosby.

On Monday, the women said that Cosby had either sexually assaulted them or coerced them into having sex. When the actor was at the height of his career as the star of "The Cosby Show" on NBC, four of the allegations are from the late 1980s or early 1990s. Cindra Ladd, a former Hollywood producer, has accused Cosby of raping her in 1969, according to 'Variety.' This is the fifth complaint.

Lili Bernard, an actress who appeared as a guest on "The Cosby Show," is one of the plaintiffs. Lili originally disclosed her claim during a news conference with Gloria Allred in 2015. In 2021, Bernard sued Cosby separately in New Jersey.
Bernard also went to the civil trial in Santa Monica, California, in June 2022, when the jury ordered Bill Cosby to pay Judy Huth $500,000 for the sexual assault she suffered in 1975, when she was 16 years old.

According to the Adult Survivors Act, which extends a one-year "lookback window" allowing accusers to file civil claims of sexual assault regardless of the statute of limitations, Bernard, Ladd, Eden Tirl, Jewel Gittens, and Jennifer Thompson brought the New York complaint.

Six months after Governor Kathy Hochul approved the law, the window finally opened on November 24. The law applies to accusers who were adults at the time of the alleged assaults, unlike comparable statutes in New York and other states.

The complaint was deemed "frivolous" by Cosby's spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, who also claimed that the five victims were part of a "parade of accusers" who had come forward between 2014 and 2016.

This isn't about justice for claimed sexual assault victims; it's all about money, as we have always said and now America can see, Wyatt added. "We are certain that the legal system and the court of public opinion will uphold the law and clear Mr. Cosby of these purported charges. Mr. Cosby continues to fiercely refute all accusations made against him and eagerly anticipates going on the defence in court." Cosby, who is now 85, was found guilty of a criminal sex assault case in Pennsylvania in April 2018. But in 2021, after serving over three years in prison, he was freed after the state Supreme Court overturned the conviction.
