General Bipin Singh Rawat: Country's first CDS

General Bipin Rawat, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, ADC (born March 16, 1958) are a four-star general of the Indian Army. He is India's first and current Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). On 30th December 2019, he was appointed as India's first CDS and assumed office from 1st January 2020. Prior to assuming charge as CDS, he served as chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee as well as the 27th Chief of the Indian Army.

Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand, in a Hindu Garh-Rajput family. The family was serving in the Indian Army for generations. His father Laxman Singh Rawat was from Saij village in Pauri Garhwal District and reached the post of Lieutenant General. His mother was from the Uttarkashi district and was the daughter of Kishan Singh Parmar, a former member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Uttarkashi. Rawat studied at The Cambrian Hall School in Dehradun and St Edward's School, Shimla, then joined the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was honoured with the 'Sword of Honour'.

Rawat graduated from the United States Army Command at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington and Higher Command course at the General Staff College. Since his tenure at DSSC, he has an M.Phil degree in Defence Studies as well as a Diploma in Management and Computer Studies from the University of Madras. In 2011, he was awarded a doctorate of philosophy from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on military media strategic studies.
