Imphal: Senior BJP leader N Biren Singh, who was unanimously elected as the legislature party's leader in Manipur on Sunday, will take the oath of office as the state's Chief Minister for a second term on Monday at 3 p.m.

Singh was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP's legislature party at a meeting on Sunday attended by the party's central observers, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Singh had visited Delhi ahead of the BJP's state legislature party convention, when he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

In the recently ended Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party retained control in the state by obtaining an absolute majority of 32 seats in the 60-member House. Congress won five seats, while the NPP won seven. The Naga People's Front received five seats, while the Kuki People's Alliance received two. Three seats were won by independents.

The BJP leaders in Manipur have been debating the formation of a government after the BJP secured an absolute majority in the state for the first time. The previous government in the state was formed by the BJP with the backing of the Naga People's Front (NPF) and the National People's Party (NPP), with Biren Singh as Chief Minister.
