Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a great poet and writer of Hindi, who assimilates himself in some lines of his creation 'Madhushala'. Though Harivansh Rai Bachchan Ji does not have any connection with Bhopal, but the marriage of his son and Bollywood's famous actor Amitabh Bachchan added his connection to Bhopal.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan Ji was born on 27 November 1907 in Amodh village of Patti tehsil of Pratapgarh, Allahabad. He was affectionately called Bachchan at home. He became so famous for his poems and writings that later he got a different identity all over the world with the same name. A few years after his birth, he came with his family from Amodh village to Allahabad and after that he started living in a rented house in Zero Road area. After which he started taking his primary education. More than half of his life was spent living in a rented house.
After completing primary education, Harivansh Rai Bachchan did his B.A. in 1929 from Allahabad College. After which he took admission in MA. Due to the non-cooperation movement of Gandhiji, in 1930, he quit his studies after passing MA in the first year, which he completed in 1937-38. He also went to Cambridge to do research on the poems of WB Yeats, the noted poet of English literature.
According to reports, when Harivansh Rai Bachchan was in BA first year, he got married to Shyama but after Shyama's death, Harivansh became very unhappy. To get away from loneliness, he went to his friend Prakash living in Bareilly. He meets a girl named Miss Teji Suri and falls in love with her, after which a new love story begins. In the year 24 January 1942, Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan got married.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan got the greatest fame in the year 1935 when his poem Madhushala was printed. In the year 1966, he was also elected as a member of Rajya Sabha. Harivansh was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976. He died on 18 January 2003 in Mumbai when he was 95 years old.
