Born on August 28, 1896, Firak Gorakhpuri's real name was Raghupathi Sahai, a famous Urdu writer. He was born into a Kaystha family in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. In 1920, he quit his job and jumped into the self-governing movement and was sentenced to one-and-a-half years in prison. After his release from jail, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru replaced him as Under Secretary in the All India Congress office. But, later, after Nehru left Europe, he stepped down as Under Secretary. He was then an English teacher at Allahabad University from 1930 to 1959. In 1970, his Urdu poetry 'Gule Ngma' was given the Gyanpeeth Award. Firak Ji was a teacher in the English department of Allahabad University.

He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Gyanpeeth Award and the Soviet Land Nehru Award for Gul-Nagma. He was later nominated as a member of the Sahitya Akademi in 1970. Firak Gorakhpuri was also awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1968 in the field of literature and education.
