Born on August 18, 1959, Nirmala Sitharaman is India's first full-time Finance Minister. She was Union Defence Minister from September 2017 to May 2019 and before that, she had served as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge) and Finance and Corporate Affairs of India. She is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has also been the party's national spokesperson.
Nirmala Sitharaman has the distinction of being India's first full-time woman finance minister, though Indira Gandhi took over as the additional minister of prime minister. Nirmala Sitharaman was also a member of the National Commission for Women from 2003 to 2005. She was the spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party as well as India's Minister of Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge) and Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs and was appointed Defence Minister in the Modi government on September 03, 2017.
Nirmala Sitharaman completed her bachelor's education in 1980 from Sitalakshmi Ramasami College, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. He then made an M.Phil in International Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Nirmala Sitharaman has also worked with Price Water House Coopers as Senior Manager (Research and Analysis). She had also worked for the BBC World Service for some time.
