The first woman to win an Olympic medal has a story to tell. The lady who did everything she could just to gain an Olympic medal. The famous weightlifter after a good career tried hands at homemaking. The media wouldn’t leave her as she was the centre point of their news.
Winning a bronze in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympics is not an easy task.


But now that it’s been 18 years of her off weightlifting career nobody even remembers her. Chuck the media, not even the sports fraternities.


She hails from Andhra Pradesh and has four sisters. She got marries to Rajesh Tyagi who was also a weightlifter. She gave birth to a baby soon after. The athlete gave up on commonwealth games as her father’s health started to deteriorate. She later won the bronze for the nation after her father’s demise.
Here are some facts you should be aware of:
1. She was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1995 and the Padma Shri in 1999
2. In 1994 she won the gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in Istanbul.
3. She failed to score in the 2004 Athens Olympics and decided to give her career rest.
4. She is currently living in Yamunanagar and is employed with the Food Corporation of India
