On Tuesday, the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that all officials, including the Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Fund (HR&CE), once again pledge to follow Hinduism.

Under Rule 10 of the HR&CE Act, 1959, there is a provision that all the officers and employees appointed to carry out the functions provided under this law will follow Hinduism, otherwise, their job will be lost.

Hearing the PIL on the matter, a bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and Justice Krishnan said that what applies to the lower class employees also applies to the employees working at higher levels. This department maintains more than 40 thousand temples of the state and the employees working in it have to take a pledge to follow Hinduism.
