New Delhi: The Supreme Court has upheld the Modi government's decision to give 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections (EWS) of the general category. Now EWS reservations will continue in the country. Three of the five-judge bench have upheld the 103rd Amendment Act 2019 of the Constitution. In 2019, the Modi government amended the Constitution to announce a 10 per cent reservation for the economically backward people of the general category. This decision of the Modi government was challenged in the apex court.

In the 5-judge bench, three judges, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Justice Bela Trivedi and Justice JB Pardiwala ruled in favour of the EWS reservation. While Chief Justice (CJI) UU Lalit and Justice Ravindra Bhat have expressed their disagreement over the EWS reservation. BJP national general secretary CT Ravi termed the apex court's verdict as a victory for the Modi government's social justice mission. At the same time, Minister of State for Law SP Singh Baghel has described it as a decision to bring a smile on the faces of economically weaker children.

At the same time, Congress leader Udit Raj reacted sharply after this decision of the apex court. He wrote in a tweet, 'The Supreme Court is casteist, there is still no doubt! When it came to EWS reservation, how did it turn around that the 50% limit is not a constitutional obligation, but whenever it came to giving reservation to SC/ST/OBC, the 50% limit in the Indra Sawhney case was cited.  According to the Supreme Court's decision, the earlier reservation for SC /ST / OBC will continue, but a 10% quota will be given to the poor people of the general category.
