Siliguri: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has today announced a 12-hour Bandh in North Bengal after the death of the worker. Earlier yesterday, after violent protests by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) against the Mamata Banerjee government in Siliguri, the police had to drop tear gas shells and resort to water canon to calm it.

During this time a BJP worker was killed. Officials said that during this period many protesters and policemen were injured in the clash. The BJP alleged that a party worker named Ullain Rai was "beaten to death by police personnel during lathicharge". It is being ascertained. The BJP has condemned the police action and has demanded imposition of President's rule in West Bengal, alleging that "law and order" has crept up.

BJP workers trying to move towards 'Uttarkanya', the branch of the state secretariat, clashed with police at two places in Siliguri against the "misrule" of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led Bengal government. The BJYM had organized two protest marches. The BJYM alleged that the government did not fulfill the promises made to the people of North Bengal and the benefit of the welfare schemes launched by the government did not reach the common man.
