CHANDIGARH: Digvijay Chautala, the leader of the Haryana BJP's key coalition partner Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), came out in support of the protesting farmers on Saturday, urging the Central government to provide financial assistance to the families of the farmers who died during the demonstration against the three new farm laws.

"I request that the Central government provide adequate financial compensation to the families of the farmers who were martyred in the protest, and that the cases filed against the farmers be revoked so that their faith in the government grows even stronger and they can return to their homes happily," Chautala said. His statement comes just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the three agriculture laws would be repealed during Parliament's winter session.

Within the party, there has also been criticism for the party's refusal to leave the coalition over the farmers' issue and for 'clinging to power.' The JJP backed the BJP, which won 40 seats but fell six seats shy of a majority.

The registration of hundreds of cases against farmers for violence, breaching barricades, and causing disturbance in the fulfilment of duties by government officials is an 'irritant' in the government led by BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar. In public, Deputy Chief Minister Chautala has mostly maintained a stoic quiet on the farmers' situation.
