BJP Fields Gautam Gambhir from East Delhi

NEW DELHI: A month after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the saffron party fielded Gautam Gambhir, the cricketer-turned-politician, from East Delhi seat for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections on Monday. The BJP  named ex-cricketer Gautam Gambhir as its candidate from East Delhi and Meenakshi Lekhi from New Delhi to contest the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP party has, so far, announced its candidates for six of the seven seats in the national capital. Mahesh Girri has been replaced by Gambhir as the party's candidate and will take on Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Meenakshi Lekhi is fielded against AAP's Brajesh Goel and Ajay Maken of the Congress. Earlier, the party nominated Harsh Vardhan and BJP state unit president Manoj Tiwari from Chandni Chowk and north-east Delhi seats, respectively. The BJP had announced candidates for four seats in the national capital late on Sunday evening and had retained sitting MPs, including Ramesh Bidhuri from south Delhi.

Parvesh Verma son of the former Delhi chief minister Saheb Singh Verma, has been fielded from West Delhi by the BJP. The last date for filing nominations and withdrawing names is April 24 and April 26, respectively. Delhi, which has seven parliamentary seats, will vote in a single phase on May 12. The results will be out on May 23.
