Guwahati: The NDA has a strong majority in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections in Assam. The election results on Saturday were considered to be the semi-finals of next year's Assam Legislative Assembly elections. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party of the state, has made a big lead by winning nine seats this time compared to one seat won in 2015. The United People's Party Liberals (UPPL), a constituent of the NDA, has got 12 seats.

The Bodoland Territorial Council has a total of 46 seats. Of these, 6 are nominated, while 40 seats are contested. Elections on these 40 seats were held on 7 and 10 December. This was the first election since the signing of the Bodo Peace Agreement earlier this year in February 2020. On this victory, Home Minister Amit Shah said that I thank the people of Assam for their continued faith in PM's resolve towards the developed North East.

The Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which has ruled the BTC for the past 17 years, has failed to win the 21 seats required for a majority. It has won just 17 seats. In 2015, it won 20 seats, which is three short this time. Terrorist-turned-politician Hagrama Mohilary-led organization has emerged as the single largest party in this election.
