BJP Govt taking 'unconstitutional' action on madrassas in UP: AIMPLB

LUCKNOW: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has questioned the UP government's move to survey unrecognised madrasas in the state.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has termed it a part of the "targeting" of the institutions by the BJP-ruled states.

AIMPLB executive member Qasim Rasool Ilyas said, "In Uttar Pradesh and Assam, madrasas are a target. This is being done even though minority institutions are protected under the law. The government of Assam has even gone so far as to bulldoze a few of the smaller madrasas while transforming others into schools. Why isn't the government taking similar measures against gurukuls if the issue is one of banning religious instruction and promoting secular education in its place?" The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has announced a survey of the madrasas in order to learn more about the faculty size, academic programme, and basic amenities offered.

There is no precise estimate of the overall number of madrasas in Uttar Pradesh, according to Ilyas, but thousands are likely to exist given that the Sachar Committee study stated that about 4% of Muslim youngsters attended them.
The AIMPLB declared that the Sachar Committee's estimate was "grossly underestimated" in and of itself.

Since the announcement, several leading Muslim figures have criticized the Yogi Adityanath-led government. Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and a member of the Lok Sabha, referred to the survey as a "mini-NRC" (National Register of Citizens) and claimed that the state of Uttar Pradesh's government is purposefully persecuting the Muslim minority.
