Srinagar: Veteran BJP leader and former Union minister Chaman Lal Gupta has passed away at his home in Gandhinagar, Jammu after a prolonged illness. A few days ago Gupta was infected with corona virus and returned home after successful treatment. Gupta was 87 years old. Gupta is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Anil Gupta, eldest son of Chaman Lal Gupta, said, 'Father was infected with corona virus on May 5 and returned home from Narayan Hospital on Sunday after successful treatment. His health suddenly deteriorated late at night and he breathed his last at 5.10 pm'. Chaman Lal Gupta was born in Jammu on April 13, 1934. He had not been in good health for the past few years and was suffering from many diseases. He first became a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 1972. He was also elected to the Assembly from 2008 to 2014. He was also the president of jammu and kashmir BJP twice.

Chaman Lal Gupta was elected MP from Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu in 1996 and won the seat in 1998 and 1999 as well. Gupta was minister of state in the Ministry of Civil Aviation from October 13, 1999 to September 1, 2001. Gupta was minister of state (independent charge) of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries between September 1, 2001 and June 30, 2002 and minister of state for defence from July 1, 2002 to 2004.
