New Delhi: Several Islamic countries have expressed their displeasure over a statement by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, following which BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy has hit back. In one of his tweets, he asked, "Was Muslim countries condemned for the blast at the Sankat Mochan temple in which 14 priests lost their lives?"

In his tweet, Swamy wrote, "Muslim countries should know that Muslim extremists planted bombs to blow up the Sankat Mochan temple on March 8, 2006. At least 14 priests lost their lives and more than 100 devotees were injured. Did these Muslim countries condemn it? The New York Times published a full report.'' On March 9, 2006, a New York Times report said, "On the evening of Tuesday (March 7, 2006), there was an explosion at the Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi and a nearby railway station. At least 14 people were killed and more than 100 injured. The explosives were filled inside a pressure cooker and left in the bag at several places. The NYT report said, "A bomb was planted in the premises of the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple as thousands of devotees had gathered in the evening to offer prayers.''

In this case, the police arrested only one of the accused, Waliullah, from Phulpur village of Prayagraj on April 5, 2006. He was accused of plotting the blast at the Sankat Mochan temple and harbouring the terror outfit HUJI. Along with this, AK-47 and RDX were recovered from him. The convict of this case, Waliullah, has been sentenced to death by the Ghaziabad court.
