Disgruntled BJP MP from northwest Delhi Udit Raj joined the Congress on Wednesday, a day after being denied ticket by the saffron party. It is being told that the BJP wanted to add Udit Raj to be identified as a dalit leader. But he was angry with not getting tickets for the Lok Sabha elections. Party veteran leaders also tried to persuade them, but they remained firm on their demands, whose results finally came out in the form of separation from BJP and joining the Congress.

Raj joined the Congress after meeting party president Rahul Gandhi here this morning. On Wednesday, Raj tweeted he would not have been "hurt" had the BJP told him earlier that he would not be given a ticket. Udit Raj is currently a member of North-West Delhi. In the 2014 elections, he won from here on the BJP ticket.

Angered by not getting tickets for the Lok Sabha elections, the Uttar Pradesh minister had also warned to leave BJP on Tuesday. The BJP had replaced Raj from the North West Lok Sabha constituency with Punjabi Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans. On Tuesday, he had said the BJP might have decided to drop him for protesting against the apex court's order that nullified the stringent provisions of the Dalit protection law.
