The opposition BJP has taken a lead over ruling Congress in the number of seats when counting for the four-phase panchayat Samiti and zila Parishad polls was held on Tuesday. In stray violence following announcements, a person was killed in Sikar district.

As final results are tallied for Panchayat elections in Rajasthan, the ruling Congress has not fared properly. The beleaguered celebration had been on shaky ground earlier this year, as various MLAs below then Deputy CM Sachin Pilot rebelled against the celebration leadership. While the tally is however to be finalised, the BJP seems poised to corner the lion’s share of seats in the Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections held in Rajasthan’s 21 districts.

The BJP won 1,835 panchayat Samiti seats while the Congress managed 1,718 when results for 4,050 seats were announced. The total number of seats is 4,371 in 222 panchayat samitis where elections were held. The leads for Zila parishads are also similar, with BJP winning 312 seats while Congress managing only 239 when results for 580 seats were announced. The total number of seats is 636.
