Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday fielded Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and L Murugan from Assam and Madhya Pradesh respectively for the Rajya Sabha bypolls. The BJP has issued a statement announcing the candidature. Tell you that the two leaders have recently been inducted into his cabinet by PM Narendra Modi. He has to become a Member of Parliament within six months.
Sonowal and Murugan are almost certain to come to the Rajya Sabha as the BJP has a majority in the assembly of both states. In Assam, Biswajit Daimaru's resignation had left a Rajya Sabha seat vacant, Daimari has become the assembly speaker. In Madhya Pradesh, a Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant following the resignation of the then Union minister Thaawarchand Gehlot, who has been made governor of Karnataka. Recently, the Election Commission had announced by-elections to 6 Rajya Sabha seats and election dates in one Rajya Sabha seat.
This includes 7 Rajya Sabha seats in 6 states for which bypolls and biennial elections (Biennial election) are proposed. According to the Election Commission, it includes two seats in Tamil Nadu and 1 each in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. At the same time, elections were also announced in a Rajya Sabha seat in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
