New Delhi: Bjp MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi has now cornered the Modi government in Parliament as well. He has questioned the government over the deaths in police custody. He asked how many people died in police custody this year and what steps the government had taken to reduce them. This was responded to by Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai. He said 151 people have lost their lives in police custody this year. This figure is up to November 15. However, on this question, the Union Minister also taught him the lessons of the functions of the State Government and the Central Government.

At the same time, what did the Government do? Responding to this, Nityanand Rai said that as per the Constitution, police and public order are state subjects, so the Central Government does not interfere. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the State Government to curb such incidents and protect the citizens. However, he pointed out that the Central Government has been issuing advisories from time to time in cases of custody deaths and the National Human Rights Commission also provides guidelines.

According to a response from the Home Ministry, 151 people have lost their lives in police custody across the country till November 15 this year. Maharashtra has the highest number of 26 deaths. Gujarat (21 deaths) is second and Bihar (18) is third. In Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, 11-11 people have lost their lives in police custody. Meanwhile, two people have died in Jammu and Kashmir.
